July-August, 2010 Report

Gray skies of El Nino roll on but the beach crowds remain. Weekends especially have stayed busy at the beach and conditions have been challenging with radical shifting of sandbars including the one the lifeguard tower sits on. Exceptional high tides have sculpted further inland reshaping not just the texture but the full contour of the tidal zone. Swell frequency has been nearly continuous and swell size medium this past month. Surf crowds have been moderate to light considering the boon of high quality surf we’ve had lately.

A couple of important thank-yous are headlining this edition beginning with charter member supporters Christian and Cassandra Williams for their timely and generous cash contribution and equally sincere thanks go to Jeff and Crawford Berry of Alpharetta, GA for their continuing generous support of the Lifeguard Program as well.

Signature collection continues in support of the petition request for government help from the mayor’s office, as part of a fund raising attempt sponsored by the Woodruff family of Land Assurance Realty.

In response to an offer by former Dominical surf instructor and local activist Debbie Zec to introduce or facilitate a meeting between the Domninical Lifeguards and the Jaco Lifeguards an exploratory trip is being scheduled for late August. Issues of concern are: government assistance and funding. Local funding picture. Training and certification and other legal matters.

Progress continues with the official website along with continued thanks to computer colleague Greg Gordon host of crsurf.com. For the continuing technical assistance. The paypal service continues to function well and several hundred dollars in small amounts have been collected the past month.

Future fundraisers large and small are encouraged among local businesses. Give your own business a boost by staging a benefit for the lifeguards, always a popular thing to do. Saving lives – a worthy cause. And good business.
