1/4/2010
Walled-up, closed out and blown-out were some local descriptions of the surf conditions even though nobody really wanted to talk about it.

share some of what your smoking bro.

The waves tuesday afternoon from 3 to 5:30 where fucking insanely good.

The sun was shining, the waves were blue, the birds where chanting, and the river was dazzlling green with a faint touch of clouds on the horizon... Dont be silly you lurch mc gurch.

LESS BS AND MORE TALK ABOUT WAVES

Steve, I've been reading your blog every day for a couple of months, and it has been useful to me in trying to relate the wave model (WW3) predictions to actual conditions in Dominical. As they say, one picture is worth a mouthful, or a blogful, of words, so the photos are useful as well. Would you consider dating them so I could get an even better idea of what the surf is doing? Even if you could tell me if the first half dozen or so, for example, were from yesterday. I'll be back soon, and I want to schedule my stay when there are going to be some nice, long ,old guy, longboard lefts.
Congrats on the good work y'all are doing down there. Happy new year, and may life be good to you in 2011.

Steve,
I am finally going to return to CR after 2 years, and will be in Dominical Dec. 1 or so. I have heard about the rains !
I also hope to have swim fins for the lifeguards.
See you soon Jay

Hey Guys,
I want to let you know that you will get through these financial problems and another "golden era" will return. People will realize the importance of Dominical lifeguards and that the local governments will one-day wake up, invest properly, build roads in town and ultimately understand that funding is needed for you...call me cynical but if it wasn't for Andrew Webster and his team I wouldn't be alive today, writing this...hang in there, your more important and needed than you realize...my story:

I traveled for 70 days from Belize down to Costa Rica during the summer of 2010...among all the activities I did, surfing the Pacific coast's from Nicaragua down to Dominical was the most liberating thing I had ever done, until on the last day, August 31, 2010 it almost ended there. On Dominical beach, I got pulled out by a strong rip that I barely noticed and for about...I can't even recall how long, it just felt endless, I had 10 footers consistently crashing down on me, while being pulled back and forth by the current. Half unconscious and with a dislocated shoulder, then and there I was ready to give up, because the thought of dying and being all alone was so frightening I just wanted it to end. Where I found the strength to swim out of it I will never know...all I remember was being tumbled over by a wave and opening my eyes under water and seeing darkness, and for a short instant everything felt calm until my lungs began hurting. There I realized that dying at 20 was just not right, and how selfish it is to do that to the one's you love...who will live with that thought. After that, my memory blurs, but I remember swimming towards the beach and although I wasn't far, I was exhausted and needed help...that's when I saw the most inspiring thing ever; Andrew Webster on my board swimming in the distance. I didn't even care about the waves tumbling over me or the water splashing into my lungs...I just screamed "ayudo" until he saw me, swam towards me and saved my life. Whether it was for living or dying I was just relieved of not being alone anymore...I hope people will realize the importance of people like Andrew and his team, and I hope people don't have to go through what I did just to donate for the right reason. Thanks again Andrew, what you told me I will never forget, and I hope to be back in Dominical one day and continue surfing...

Hola David! Thanks for the note and your interest in helping out. 4 years ago when you met matt we were in our heyday, our golden era. we had a jetski and quad and were crusin in high gear compared to now. 3 years ago matt's wife yvonni turned up pregnant and matt decided with 3 kids he needed to become a real wage earner and find a real job. we had never managed to increase his pay enough to allow him to stay. matt resigned in april of 2008. we hired andrew webster from san diego, ca and he's still with us but just barely. we started feeling the economic downturn toward the end of 08 and we've been going downhill since. the lifeguard program was in debt to hotel roca verde for over $5000 when we held our annual 4th of july fund raiser which brought in over ten grand but it wasn't easy and it's getting worse. so we have a six man staff, andrew is our captain and we are just scraping by from month to month with no jetski, no quad, barely making payroll. somehow morale is good, we've got a good crew and we're all hopeful that things will eventually turn around and meanwhile we can't offer you much of anything but good surf and an appreciated but unpaid volunteer spot on the tower. we have two gringo volunteers who work regular shifts. wish it were different but there it is. thanks again David and keep in touch - things could change... ~steve at www.jazzysriverhouse.com (lifeguard assistant director and correspondent).

Hello,

I'm not sure if this is the best way to contact you, but the "contact" button on your website wasn't working. So this is a shot in the dark. My name is David Terry and I'm writing to find out about the possibility of coming down for a while this winter and working on the beach. I actually met Matt about 4 years ago while I was down there and we talked about me coming down to work sometime. I am a former Cape May Point, New Jersey Lifeguard. I am currently living in Northern California and work seasonally for Cal Fire as a firefighter/EMT and a carpenter in the off season. I am looking to head south for a while this winter after our fire season ends with the intent of improving my Spanish and getting some surf someplace that doesn't require 5 mil rubber! I am pretty flexible and really only need to cover my food and lodging expenses. I'd would love to get back into the stand again. I'd also be happy to offer my carpentry skills or help train your guards in EMS. Hope to hear from you soon.
